Community led re-greening in Southwark

Blackfriars Green Network (BGN) is a group of 60 local residents and office workers around Blackfriars Road. They’ve come together to reimagine their local streets creating more space for greenery, play and community initially focusing on Lancaster Street. You can also follow them on their Instagram account here

The project

Thanks to the kind support from our donors, we are helping the group to refine their plans and help make them a reality, holding a co-design workshop on 29th September with the group and other stakeholders. The workshop aimed to build confidence and knowledge within the group to plan and implement resident-led projects. This was attended by nine people, five from Blackfriars Green Network, and representatives from Landuse (LUC), London Living Streets and Trees for Cities. We created a design brief to guide the next phase of masterplanning work. The emerging brief focused on street improvements such as street greening (with Sustainable urban drainage and street trees), seating, depaving and traffic calming.

Next steps: We will be supporting BGN refine their plans and run a public consultation using our Create Communities community platform to get wider stakeholder feedback on draft proposals.
